Slovak Prime Minister Robert Fico emphasized that for real progress toward ending the war in Ukraine, Western nations must accept that Ukraine cannot join NATO and be ready for talks on possible territorial changes. Speaking after a video call with EU leaders, Fico said NATO membership for Ukraine is a non-starter for peace. European Council President Antonio Costa, who chaired the meeting, also debriefed leaders about the recent Washington summit and stressed that advancing Ukraine’s EU membership and active European participation in future peace talks are both essential.
