Trump says he has authorized covert CIA operations in Venezuela

Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro criticized U.S. President Donald Trump on Wednesday, after the American leader confirmed he’d authorized covert CIA operations in Venezuela.

“No to regime change, which reminds us so much of the endless failed war in Afghanistan, Iraq, Libya and so on. Not to CIA-orchestrated coups d’état,” Maduro said at an event of the National Council of Sovereignty and Peace.

Asked why he had authorized the CIA to operate in Venezuela, Trump claimed Venezuela was “emptying its prisons” into the U.S. and cited the large number of drugs being trafficked into the country.

Venezuela’s Foreign Minister Yvan Gil accused the U.S. government of seeking “regime change” aimed at seizing the country’s oil resources.
