Canadian PM Mark Carney apologises to Donald Trump after anti-tariff Reagan ad backfires

Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney has apologised to U.S. President Donald Trump for an anti-tariff TV ad that spiralled into a diplomatic storm. The ad, paid for by Ontario’s government, featured Ronald Reagan’s 1987 speech on trade, but was edited in a way that critics say misrepresented his words. Trump labelled the ad “fake,” accused it of trying to influence the U.S. Supreme Court’s tariff case, and retaliated by imposing new tariffs on Canadian imports. Speaking at the APEC Summit in South Korea, Carney confirmed he offered a private apology to Trump during a dinner, calling their talk “a very nice conversation.”
