Ex-Trump advisor John Bolton indicted, accused of mishandling classified docs

John Bolton, former advisor to U.S. President Donald Trump, arrived at a Maryland courthouse on Friday on charges he mishandled classified documents.

Bolton, who was indicted Thursday, is the third prominent Trump critic to face prosecution in recent weeks, as the American president dispenses with decades-long norms insulating federal law enforcement from political pressure.

The indictment against Bolton charges him with eight counts of transmission of national defence information, and 10 counts of retention of national defence information — all in violation of the Espionage Act.

Bolton served as White House national security advisor during Trump’s first term.
