Raffensperger, who defied Trump in 2020, joins Georgia’s 2026 governor’s race
The Republican Secretary of State who rejected President Donald Trump’s call to help overturn the state’s 2020 election results has announced that he’s running for governor in 2026. Georgia’s Brad Raffensperger is a wealthy engineering entrepreneur who the Associated Press says might appeal most to business-oriented Republicans. LiveNOW’s Austin Westfall is learning more about the upcoming gubernatorial election with Tom LoBianco, a veteran national politics reporter and editor of 24sight News.
Raffensperger, first elected secretary of state in 2018 and re-elected in 2022, built his political career as a conservative Republican, serving on the Johns Creek City Council and in the state House before becoming the state’s top elections official.
On social issues, Raffensperger backs stricter school safety policies, a ban on puberty blockers and transition surgeries for minors, and new limits on transgender athletes.
