A vote last night by Israel’s parliament in favour of a bill giving the country sovereignty over the West Bank has been criticised by the US secretary of state, Marco Rubio, who called it a threat to Trump’s peace deal. JD Vance, the US vice president, described the vote as “weird”.
Rubio made the comments before his visit to the new American command centre inside Israel, after the Knesset voted in favour of the bill, which paves the way for annexation of the West Bank.
The law would result in “Israeli sovereignty across Judea and Samaria”, the biblical name for land west of the Jordan River, which has recently been recognised by the UK and other western countries as Palestine. Politicians passed a preliminary reading of the bill by a narrow margin — 25 in support and 24 against.
